Internships and Careers
We prioritize providing hands-on experience for our students on campus while supporting them to pursue off-campus experiences. Students need to gain experience, aside from classroom experiences, to ensure they are career ready upon graduation.
Get hands-on professional experience through CCI opportunities
Experiences will vary by student, and not every valuable experience will be labeled as an internship. Students need to think broadly about their experiences, be intentional during their experiences, and reflect on how they can communicate the experience to a future employer.

The College of Communication and Information offers a variety of ways beyond internships for students to immerse themselves in the same kind of work they will do upon graduating, including:
Working at a CCI outlet
Students can work in a variety of roles through: media outlets under The Media Center; at the student-run agency, The Orange Room; and through unique courses such as the Paralympics Project.
Traveling across the globe
Participating in one of the many study abroad classes offered through the Bohan Center for Global Engagement lets students apply classroom learning to real-world settings in a different country and culture.
Joining a signature program
CCI’s signature programs provide additional opportunities for professional growth through mentoring, networking, workshops, travel, and more—each program is unique in what it offers and the students it serves.
Participating in student organizations
CCI has several student organizations, all of which provide opportunities for students to network and learn, such as: industry guest speakers, leadership roles, mentorship, and more time to network and learn from CCI faculty and fellow students.
Conducting research
The Research and Innovation Center enhances student research activities through offering opportunities for paid research internships, experiences in the CCI Innovation Labs, networking within the research community, and research-oriented professional development.

Internships are short-term opportunities where a student works for an organization, allowing them to apply their course knowledge and gain industry-specific skills in a real workplace setting.

Students can utilize Handshake to search for internships and connect with a Career Coach for support in their internship search. CCI has a career hub created just for current students to streamline their internship search.

Career outcomes
The Office of Professional Development is here to support undergraduate and graduate students search for their post-graduation outcomes. Post-graduation outcomes include a student’s first outcome within six months of graduation.

Professional development courses
Our students take a four-class series as a student to develop an appreciation for their major, explore how their field connects to other industries, learn about career options, and develop skills to share their CCI story. Students will engage in course activities and assignments on their career values, identify career interests, resume development, set career-orientated action steps, and project-based learning with an employer.
