Showalter holds a BA in Communication with a concentration in journalism and media and an Asian studies minor from the State University of New York at Geneseo. She completed her MS in Mass Communication at Boston University. After graduating from Boston University, Showalter entered industry where she worked in various non-profit and higher education settings before spending the last six years of her career in marketing in the tech space.  

Her research investigates the impacts of consuming diverse media including representation, but also the study of consumption of foreign media in America. When not studying or working at her OIT graduate assistantship, Showalter is an avid reader and likes to read three to four books at any given time. She is also a passionate fan of her hometown sports teams—namely the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.
