Through the College of Communication and Information programs, students will gain practical, hands-on professional experience and develop a diverse, global perspective during their academic career.
Below are opportunities and events that prepare students for a rapidly transforming communication field.
CCI offers college-wide and school-specific international study opportunities through the University of Tennessee’s Programs Abroad.
Students from throughout the college can participate in the semester-long program in Sydney, Australia, where they will earn 13 credit hours and take part in an eight-week internship. Program- or major-specific programs led by CCI professors include studies in Siena, Italy (Public Relations), Dublin, Ireland (Communication Studies), Rome, Italy (Advertising), and Prague, Czech Republic (Journalism).
Student Organizations & Internships
In each school, students can join study-specific clubs and societies, many of which are chapters of national professional organizations. Examples include the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
CCI-wide organizations include the Diversity Student Leaders Society and the CCI Graduate Student Association.
Each school provides guidance on internship opportunities in a student’s particular field of study. The School of Journalism and Electronic Media has several hands-on student media organizations including the WUTK radio station, Tennessee Journalist, and Scoop. Independent student media outlets include: The Daily Beacon, The Volunteer Channel and Phoenix.
Social Media Week
CCI’s annual Social Media Week has been held since 2013 and highlights current topics and developments in social media communication.
CCI Diversity & Inclusion Week
This four-day annual event offers participants an opportunity to discuss diversity and inclusion issues and to share best practices by bringing together leaders and experts from the university and beyond.
