Joy Marie Doan

Joy Marie Doan is an associate professor of practice in the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UT). Prior to joining the faculty at UT in January 2021, Joy-Marie worked as an academic librarian at University of Miami; Northwestern University; California State University, Northridge; and the University of California, Los Angeles. Doan has published and presented extensively in the areas of academic libraries and access and belonging. She also has extensive experience with grants and has served as a grant reviewer for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and USArtists International.
   
Doan’s fellowship experiences at Rutger’s University Institute of Jazz Studies and the Association of Research Libraries, as well as her experiences as an intern at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History have greatly informed her research, LIS professional trajectory, and pedagogical praxis. At SIS, she advises students on the public and academic library pathways, emphasizing the importance of blending theoretical knowledge and practical application. She teaches courses information foundations and concepts, information organization and retrieval, academic libraries, grant development, collection development and management. Joy-Marie also serves as the faculty advisor for the SIS student chapter of ALA.
