Christopher J. Carpenter is an associate professor in the School of Communication Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His research interests are in persuasion, social media, close relationships, and combinations of these topics such as social media influencers and how social media affect our relationships. Carpenter has published over 70 academic journal articles in a variety of high-impact communication journals as well as interdisciplinary journals. He also co-authored two textbooks, one on Persuasion and one on Compliance-Gaining Techniques. Carpenter’s work in meta-analysis was awarded the John E. Hunter Meta-Analysis Research Program Award by the International Communication Association and he is on the latest Stanford list of the world’s top 2% most influential scientists. Carpenter’s research on social media has been discussed in many mass media outlets such as CNN, Forbes, Le Monde, The Guardian, Psychology Today, Men’s Health, and Jezebel.com. Carpenter served as the Chair of the Communication and Social Cognition Division of the National Communication Association and as an Associate Editor of Asian Communication Research.
