Exploring communication

around the world

There’s no better way to learn more about how people communicate in other countries and cultures than getting out there and experiencing it first hand. Whether it is domestic or abroad, students at the School of Communication Studies have multiple opportunities to get out and explore their career interests.

Our Programs Abroad

Our programs abroad immerse students into other cultures and ways of thinking that help them understand what communication studies looks like beyond the borders of this country.

Dublin, Ireland

Communicating Across Cultures in Dublin

Spend a month studying communication in Dublin, Ireland. Dublin is a modern cosmopolitan city that is also draped in history and culture. You will take two courses while in Ireland: CMST 491: Intercultural Communication, and CMST 491: Health Communication in Global Contexts.  Together, these classes will help you better communicate across cultures and also understand how culture impacts your wellbeing.

The Intercultural Communication course will focus on how culture influences communication processes. In today’s era of globalization, being able to communicate across cultures is essential in your ability to function in a today’s workplace as well as connect with the different people you encounter in your social circles.

The Global Health Communication Course provides a global perspective by focusing on the relationship between culture and health communication.  You will look at how communication and culture impact your wellbeing through topics like mental health, health care systems, parental leave, environmental safety, social connections, education, food and nutrition, and work-life balance.

Morocco

CCI in Morocco

This two-week faculty-led program is designed to give you hands-on global experience at the intersection of AI and data analytics, as well as storytelling skills that are in high demand in today’s global economy. Beyond academics, you’ll immerse yourself in Morocco’s rich cultural and historical landscape, exploring cities like Rabat, Casablanca, and Tangier while learning from faculty with international expertise.

I think that being over there for as long as we were really gave us a good opportunity to learn about intercultural communication that I don’t think you’re able to learn if you’re there for a short period of time. Being there in the city and traveling in the city, and going to class, really makes you feel like you’re part of the culture and not just a visitor.”
