{"id":324,"date":"2026-03-08T08:17:32","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T12:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/tops\/?page_id=324"},"modified":"2026-03-08T08:17:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T12:17:33","slug":"common-biases-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/tops\/resources-for-teachers\/speech-topics-activities\/common-biases-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Biases Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Anchoring<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing you experience influences all subsequent experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Availability heuristic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your most recent, emotional, and\/or unique experiences are the first ones you turn to when making judgments\/justifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Backfire effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You consider a challenge to your belief as an attack and therefore double down on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Barnum effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Presented with vague data, your brain fills in the gaps, making it seem specific\/personal to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Belief bias<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You refuse to question certain treasured beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bystander effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You assume others will respond before you in an emergency\/time of need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Confirmation bias<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are more likely to agree with information that supports your prior conclusions (and ignore information that doesn\u2019t).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Curse of knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After learning something, you assume it\u2019s obvious to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Declinism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You ignore the complexity of past experiences when comparing them to current experiences, ergo the past was better than the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dunning-Kruger effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts know things are complex and underestimate their abilities; novices have an overly simple view and overestimate their abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Framing effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The context and subtle cues inherent in a situation manipulate your decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fundamental attribution error<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You judge your own behavior considering intent and circumstance, but write others off as always exhibiting certain behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Groupthink<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dissent is avoided; stagnant conformity preserved (because conflict scares you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Halo effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your criticisms of people are influenced by how attractive they are, or how much you like them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In-group bias<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those in your own group are favored as better (right more often or more distinctive).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Just world hypothesis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You believe the world you prefer (where things are \u201cfair\u201d and you\u2019re allowed to do what you want) must exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Negativity bias<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negative experiences are disproportionately remembered and influential to decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Placebo effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can dupe yourself into feeling symptoms\/relief just because treatment has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reactance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you feel you are being forced, or that your perspective\/time is not respected by someone\u2019s requests, you are likely to do the opposite or resist, disregarding whether the request is good or bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Self-serving bias<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You credit yourself for your successes but blame others for your failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Spotlight effect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You overestimate how much people notice your behavior or appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sunk cost fallacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019ve invested in something, you don\u2019t want to let it go.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anchoring The first thing you experience influences all subsequent experiences.
