CCI Dean Mike Wirth to Return to Teaching
Mike Wirth, dean of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Communication and Information for the past 14 years, has announced his decision to step down and return to teaching at the end of the current academic year.
Wirth is an internationally known expert in the field of cable telecommunication and broadcast economics, and his career includes many accomplishments and accolades. He is a current member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Foster Named New ADPR Director
Professor Elizabeth Avery Foster became Director of the School of Advertising and Public Relations on August 1.
She takes over from Professor Sally McMillan, who returned to the faculty after serving as interim director since June 2019.
“Beth Foster is an internationally known scholar, an outstanding teacher and an excellent servant leader,” said Wirth. “Her experience in working with a wide range of constituencies and of developing effective working relationships at all levels will allow her to be very effective in her new role.”

Dear CCI Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni and Friends,
I’m writing to add my voice to those expressing anger and concern at the most recent murder of an unarmed black man – George Floyd – in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Unfortunately, Mr. Floyd’s murder is simply the latest injustice that has resulted in black men and women being much more likely to be killed by the police than are white men and women (2.5 times and 1.4 times more likely respectively).

Wirth to Moderate Powell Session at ACT Forum
CCI Dean Mike Wirth will serve as interviewer/moderator for a special session with Michael K. Powell, president & CEO of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and former chair of the Federal Communications Commission, at the 2012 Academic & Telecommunications (ACT) Forum in Boston on May 20.
Wirth is also a member of the planning committee for The Cable Center sponsored event, which brings leading academics together with cable industry executives for a series of discussions and presentations designed to foster increased collaboration and dialogue between industry and academia.
