HGTV Founder Receives Honorary Degree, Tells Grads to Listen, Learn, Love
Ken Lowe, CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive and founder of HGTV, received an honorary doctorate in humane letters during the College of Communication and Information ceremony on Thursday, May 11, 2017.
Lowe spoke to graduates about his own career and some of the life lessons he’s learned along the way.

HGTV Founder to Receive Honorary Degree at CCI Commencement
Ken Lowe, chairman of the board, president and CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc., will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Tennessee at the College of Communication and Information’s 2017 Commencement Ceremony on May 11 at 3:30 p.m. in Thompson Boling Arena. Lowe will also deliver the commencement speech to the graduates.

Edelman Urges Grads to Make a Difference
Civil rights and social equality advocate Marian Wright Edelman urged UT graduates to do their part to make America “more just, more hopeful, more peaceful, more productive, inclusive, and unified.”
Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek awarded Edelman an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters —the ninth honorary degree given by UT—at the College of Communication and Information commencement ceremony on Friday. Edelman then addressed graduates.

UT to Award Honorary Degrees to Social Activist and Actress
UT will award its ninth and tenth honorary degrees to social activist Marian Wright Edelman and actress Dale Dickey.
The UT Board of Trustees approved the two degrees on Thursday.
Edelman, who has strong ties to the East Tennessee area, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and speak at the College of Communication and Information commencement at 8:30 a.m. on May 8. Dickey, a Knoxville native and UT alumna, will receive an Honorary Master of Fine Arts in acting during a campus visit next year.

Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist John Noble Wilford has told some of the world’s biggest stories since he graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, almost 60 years ago.

World-Renowned Science Journalist to Receive Honorary Degree
A two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and science journalist will receive an honorary doctorate during spring commencement ceremonies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
John Noble Wilford, a 1955 journalism graduate, will receive an honorary doctorate of letters and science at the College of Communication and Information ceremony at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The UT Board of Trustees approved the degree today at its winter board meeting held in Martin. The ceremony will mark UT Knoxville’s sixth honorary degree.
