Another Fulbright; UT Student Pushes Record-Setting Recipient Tally to 19
A 19th UT student—Tiana Castillo—has just been offered a Fulbright US Student Program award for the 2018–19 academic year, making this record-setting year even more impressive for the university.
In its history, UT has had 77 student Fulbright recipients, with its first in 1959. This year, UT had 52 Fulbright candidates and 27 semifinalists, with 19 students offered awards—all single-year records for the university. UT also has one alternate who could still receive an award.

UT's Tenopir Receives Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair Honor
Carol Tenopir, a Chancellor’s Professor and the CCI Board of Visitors Professor in UT Knoxville’s School of Information Sciences, has been selected as the Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair in Information and Communications Technologies for the 2016-2017 academic year. The position is considered one of the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program.
Tenopir will be working with colleagues at the Hanken School of Economics, Department of Management and Organisation in Helsinki, Finland. Sam Swan, JEM Professor, Awarded Fulbright Grant
Sam Swan, professor of journalism and electronic media and director of internationalization and outreach in the College of Communication and Information, has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to teach this summer at two universities in Ethiopia.
This is the second Fulbright grant Swan has received in the last year. He taught at the University of Zagreb in Croatia last December.
For three weeks in late July and early August, Swan will teach radio journalism to volunteers and students at community radio stations in Hawassa University and Haramaya University.

Swan One of Four Professors Named Fulbright Scholars
Four professors at UT are spanning the globe as Fulbright Scholars this year. CCI’s Sam Swan, professor of journalism and electronic media and director of internationalization and outreach is among the four selected.
The Fulbright Program is a prestigious international exchange initiative that awards about 1,100 grants to American scholars each year. Funded by the US government, Fulbright Scholars are chosen based on their leadership and academic merits and their abilities to teach, conduct research, and contribute to solutions for shared international concerns. Swan Awarded Senior Fulbright Specialist Position
Sam Swan, professor and director of internationalization and outreach in the College of Communication and Information , has been awarded a senior Fulbright specialist position. He will be going to the University of Zagreb in Croatia to conduct workshops on TV News in December. Swan has conducted numerous workshops at the university in Croatia over the past ten years. This is his first Fulbright sponsored program.
The Fulbright Specialist Program, the US Department of State’s flagship international exchange program, links US academics and professionals to their counterparts around the world.
