Information Sciences Former Director Ed Cortez Dies at Sixty-six
Ed Cortez, professor emeritus and former director of the School of Information Sciences in the College of Communication and Information, died on Saturday October 6, 2018 at his home in Tucson, Arizona (see his obituary below).
“Ed was a champion of the information sciences profession and dedicated to supporting the next generation of leaders,” said Mike Wirth, dean of the College of Communication and Information. “He played an important role in leading the School of Information Sciences and in guiding its integration into the college. He will be greatly missed!”

CCI Receives More than $850,000 in Grants to Train Information Science Experts
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s School of Information Sciences in the College of Communication and Information has received two grants which total more than $850,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to train information science experts.
The larger of the two grants involves Chancellor’s Professor Carol Tenopir as principal investigator along with co-principal investigators SIS Professor and Interim Director Dania Bilal and SIS Associate Professor Rachel Fleming-May. They have been awarded a two-year $811,501 grant from the IMLS Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program. Cortez Appointed Chair of ALA Committee on Education
Ed Cortez, professor and former director of the School of Information Sciences (SIS) in the College of Communication and Information, has been appointed chair of the American Libraries Association (ALA) Committee on Education.
Cortez will take office in June 2016 after the ALA annual conference.
Before coming to UT, Cortez served as a professor and administrator at the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
During his eleven years at UT, Cortez has been instrumental in developing collaborative international education opportunities for SIS, including partnerships with universities in Spain, Africa, and the Caribbean. SIS Receives Two More IMLS Grants
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Center for Information and Communication Studies has received funding for projects to support rural librarians and increase Hispanic participation in teaching library science.
The grants were announced by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)as two of the 32 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grants totaling $10.3 million.
