He\u2019s also made an impact academically with his dissertation, which earned him three accolades in recent months:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Runner up for the iSchools 2020 Doctoral Dissertation Award<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sis.utk.edu\/2019\/09\/27\/sis-community-participates-co-hosts-2019-alise-conference-in-knoxville\">Third in the Doctoral Student Poster competition at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sis.utk.edu\/2019\/10\/25\/sis-represents-at-asist-best-paper-awarded-to-faculty-alumni\">Honorable mention for the ProQuest Best Dissertation Award&nbsp;from the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&amp;T)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>His dissertation, \u201cValues in Knowledge Organization Standards: A Value Analysis of Resource Description and Access (RDA)\u201d takes a look at the bias and systematic values that even technical documents such as a cataloging standard can contain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople think a lot of knowledge organizing activities are objective processes, but there\u2019s subjective elements as well. So the dissertation looked at the standard itself to see what kind of non-objective things are going on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019ll continue exploring similar themes in his research, including one project he\u2019s working on with colleagues in Syracuse and Chicago,in which they\u2019re looking at how to handle historical language used to refer to sideshow performers in photograph collections. Many sideshow performers were people with disabilities, and historical language used to describe them is often offensive to modern communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s these terminological differences and we\u2019re figuring out how to negotiate that, and convey that different terms were used and this is what they were referring to, without promoting outdated or offensive language. But it\u2019s part of the item and it\u2019s part of understanding the context of these historical objects. So those collections themselves happen to pose a lot of issues like that,\u201d Dobreski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also starting new research in collaboration with SIS Associate Professor Awa Zhu, and another researcher in Milwaukee, observing how information organization and information retrieval are intermingled in library and information sciences curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dobreski, who came on board at SIS this August, earned his PhD from Syracuse University. He taught metadata during his first semester here, and he said he\u2019s been continually impressed by the students and the projects they\u2019ve completed for the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gone so fast here and I\u2019ve really enjoyed it.
