Tennessee and the rest of the country will need more information sciences professionals in the coming years \u2013 in fact, information-related\u202fcareers expect around a 20-percent job growth rate in the next decade. As the vast amount of data being created due to technological advances increases, the need to collect, curate and organize that data also grows.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
In response to this increased demand, SIS has put forth a formal proposal for an information sciences undergraduate major. The proposal was first submitted to the University of Tennessee Knoxville and the University of Tennessee system for approval before it was presented to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC). Currently, SIS is awaiting support from THEC.\u202fOnce support is secured, approval will be sought from the UT Board of Trustees, and then the proposal will go back to THEC for final approval. \u202fIf all goes as planned, the undergraduate major will be available to students starting in fall 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe information sciences undergraduate major is the first of its kind in the state of Tennessee and a great addition to the College of Communication and Information and UT. It will attract new students to CCI and provide complementary courses to other college majors allowing our students to develop skills and expertise that make them more competitive in their communication fields,\u201d said Michael Wirth, dean of the College of Communications and Information.<\/p>\n
SIS started investigating the possibility of an undergraduate major during the 2015-2016 academic year with the creation of an undergraduate major task-force which continued in the 2016-2017 academic year.\u202fWhile the task-force was initially led by Dr. Carol Tenopir, Dr. Vandana Singh took over as chair in 2016, and was later appointed by Dr. Diane Kelly as the inaugural SIS Director of Undergraduate Studies.<\/p>\n
Dr. Singh has since led a team of faculty to develop the formal proposal for the undergraduate major, which includes two areas of concentration: data information management and analytics, and user experience design. She said the team did a lot of research to observe and establish the need for professionals in the field in Tennessee and beyond.<\/p>\n
\u202f\u201cIt\u2019s about the growth of the field, growth of the students and growth of the region,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n
Creating and submitting the proposal has been a multi-year process, and was one of Dr. Kelly\u2019s key priorities when she joined SIS as director in 2016. She said the major will train students to approach information problems from multiple perspectives, including humanist, social scientific, and computational.\u202fThe curriculum includes courses on data management, analytics and visualization; user-centered design; web development and programming; and information-seeking and literacy.\u202f<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the most exciting things to me about starting an undergraduate major in information sciences is that it allows our field to have a much greater reach. Library and information scientists have been on the cutting-edge of information management and services for decades,\u201d Kelly said.\u202f\u201cEducating people about the information sciences at the undergraduate level not only honors decades of scholars and practitioners who have worked to establish and define the field, it also helps elevate and make visible the information professions.\u201d<\/p>\n
While a few undergraduate degrees in information sciences existed before 2000, the 2000s saw a spike in undergraduate major offerings in information sciences at top-ranked universities. Establishing an undergraduate major at the University of Tennessee is aligned with larger initiatives to better integrate information science education into the university so that its deep intellectual roots can be better appreciated, studied and disseminated.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
