Bishop also presented, \u201cBouncing the FAIR data principles off of seismic reflection geologists,\u201d at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Also in attendance were SIS and Chancellor\u2019s Professor Suzie Allard, who said that an estimated 26,000 people were at this year\u2019s meeting. The AGU has more than 62,000 members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The geophysical research community is serious about making data available and reusable, which led to lively discussions both during the sessions I spoke in and throughout the conference,&#8221; Allard said. &#8220;It is always exciting to have these kinds of conversations with scientists and engineers whose work is expanding the boundaries of our knowledge and developing solutions to improve conditions for society.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also attending was SIS master\u2019s student Josh Borycz, who presented his poster \u201cAssisting Geophysicists in Data Management Perceptions and Opportunities,\u201d which was co-authored with College of Communications and Information doctoral student and SIS alum Lisa Christian, Allard, and SIS Professor Carol Tenopir, who is also deputy director for USGS.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/sis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/12\/AGU3caption.jpg\" alt=\"SIS Professor Suzie Allard at AGU\" title=\"SIS Professor Suzie Allard at AGU\" width=\"376\" height=\"308\" style=\"margin: 3px 10px;float: left\">Allard was an invited speaker for the panel discussion session \u201cChanging Culture through Credit in Support of Enabling FAIR Data\u201d and her talk was titled \u201cCultural Considerations and FAIR.\u201d She was also invited to be a member of the panel for the \u201cData FAIR Town Hall &#8211; Credit for Data Work,\u201d which was led by Shelley Stall, senior director of data leadership for AGU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several faculty and students attended the 2018 fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C. this past week.
