The members of the SIS community are no different; alumni, faculty, students, and staff are already stepping up and embodying the Volunteer Spirit during this difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>Hillary Tune, communications specialist for SIS, and also a grad student taking SIS classes, has started pitching in with a local group to sew face masks for various members of the community, including healthcare workers, patients, veterinarian workers, food handlers, and more. Demand for the masks keeps pouring in, and until a better solution is found, the volunteers will keep cutting, sewing, and distributing the masks. She and her fellow volunteers have been featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/picture-gallery\/entertainment\/2020\/03\/24\/coronavirus-ways-keep-busy-knoxville-during-social-distancing\/2903743001\/?fbclid=IwAR1oO4WwkQrHvW4B4F5sPrjEcBbypi74SFHVBCo3N2M5mFCVcYv7MS2cFuU\">Knoxville News Sentinel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSewing has been a great distraction, it\u2019s almost meditative. I was invited to do it by a friend I sew with, and who started Knox Makes Masks. I\u2019m so glad she gave me the push I needed to get involved, I\u2019m enjoying having something to do that can be helpful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5369\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5369 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sis.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Dan-Greene.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Greene\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Greene, SIS technology coordinator, alum, and lecturer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another SIS staff member, Dan Greene, is helping out in a completely different way. Greene \u2013 who is also an SIS alum and lecturer, is lending his expertise to his daughter\u2019s school with tech support for Zoom as they began to conduct class online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter&#8217;s school is utilizing a variety of online tools for at home learning and several teachers are using Zoom. Since I have extensive experience with Zoom as part of my job at SIS, I&#8217;ve volunteered to help out. Offering a few bits of knowledge has helped them avoid a lot of trial and error,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10173\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10173 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sis.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/CovidCards2-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cards created by MSIS student Kristina Mullinex for members of a local assisted living facility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MSIS student Kristina Mullinex said she wanted to help out, and needed something to do, so she scrounged up some watercolor paper and began drawing and painting on it to create cards for the 38 residents at a local assisted living facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKindness begets kindness, and in times like this, we all need to spread those seeds more than any other time.
