This week, Trump White House presses a threat to close the border. We use Social Studio to analyze people\u2019s opinions on Twitter from both Mexico and the US.<br \/>\nWe retrieve posts from Mexico in both English and Spanish. There are around 7,100 tweets, and one-third of them are in English. The most mentioned words from Mexican users include \u201cUnidos (United States),\u201d \u201cMexico,\u201d \u201cTrump,\u201d \u201cALMO (the initial of Mexican President),\u201d \u201cfrontera\u201d (border).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-751\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-1-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-750\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the sentiment analysis, it is interesting to see the positive trend, and the negative direction crossed between March 27 and 28. What happened? On March 26, Mexico\u2019s president, Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador called for Spain to apologize for the conquest of the Aztec Empire 500 years ago, and also asked Mexican people to respect the US government before the approval of the border wall budget. However, when President Trump tweeted his negative comment on illegal immigrants from Central America, the negative sentiment came to a peak.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-752\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-753\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-4.png\" alt=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-754\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-5.png\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nOn the other hand, there are much more tweets from the US than from Mexico: 375, 000 posts during the past week, and nearly 99% of them are in English. Besides \u201cTrump,\u201d \u201cMexico\u201d and \u201cclose,\u201d it is interesting to see that \u201cavocados\u201d appears a lot. Also, it is believed that the American people will run out of avocados if the border is closed since a majority amount of avocados in the US are imported from Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-755\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-6.png\" alt=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-756\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-7.png\" alt=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-757\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/04\/Fig-8.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted by Cassandra Huang The border with Mexico has been an issue that raises lots of debates.
