The Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-01-27\/kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-victims\">reported<\/a> the full names, included photographs and short biographies of each victim. Here is a list of the victims from the crash:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kobe Bryant, 41<\/li>\n<li>Gianna Bryant, 13<\/li>\n<li>John Altobelli, 56<\/li>\n<li>Keri Altobelli, 46<\/li>\n<li>Alyssa Altobelli, 13,<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Chester, 45,<\/li>\n<li>Payton Chester, 13<\/li>\n<li>Christina Mauser, 38<\/li>\n<li>Ara Zobayan, 50<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While news coverage has increased focus on all the victims, so has the conversation on how to remember Kobe Bryant.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Divide<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the last couple of days, there has been a divide with how to remember the totality of Bryant\u2019s legacy. Some have focused on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2020\/01\/28\/kobe-bryants-lasting-legacy-is-how-he-lived\/\">career-inspiring accomplishments<\/a>, others on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/washington-post-suspends-reporter-after-kobe-bryant-rape-allegation-tweet-n1124031\">2003 sexual assault<\/a> case or have tried to focus on both. Merely hours after the reports of these people\u2019s deaths or maybe a couple days afterwards, just to give <em>everyone<\/em> time to process the situation? However, I noticed the debate on social media: The question is not about <em>should<\/em> we talk about it, but <em>when <\/em>should we talk about it? Well, that depends on the person.<\/p>\n<p>There are many conflicting emotions surrounding this event. People are entitled to feel what they feel; and nobody should tell them otherwise. Some believe not speaking now is a call for silence. However, it could be a plea for process and reflection. Everybody should take time to process. Bryant\u2019s legacy is complex, but his legacy does make one feel something.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, one positive thing that some can agree on is #girldad, well\u2026 I hope there is a positive consensus.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How #Girldad Started?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Twitter user, Gian Cruz (@gianorama), tweeted a video of Elle Duncan, an ESPN reporter, sharing a story of her first encounter with Bryant.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Kobe story Elle Duncan shared on Sportscenter was so heartfelt and heartbreaking, more people need to see it. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;The only small source of comfort for me, is knowing that he died doing what he loved the most: being a dad. Being a girl dad.&quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elleduncanESPN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@elleduncanESPN<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RIPGigi?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RIPGigi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RIPKobe?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RIPKobe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a2GpkY2Eb4\">pic.twitter.com\/a2GpkY2Eb4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Gian Cruz (@helloxgian) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/helloxgian\/status\/1221963474466553859?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Duncan was 8-months pregnant with her daughter. According to the video and full transcript published on <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/esp-ns-elle-duncan-shares-touching-story-about-kobe-bryant-who-loved-being-a-girl-dad-165102545.html\">Yahoo!Sports<\/a>, she stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I saw him, and I thought, \u2018Oh my gosh. That\u2019s Kobe. I gotta get a picture for the \u2018Gram. \u2026 I didn\u2019t get it for a few minutes, because, as I approached him, he immediately commented on my rather large eight-month pregnant belly. \u2018How are you? How close are you? What are you having?\u2019 \u2018A girl,\u2019 I said, and he then high-fived me. \u2018Girls are the best.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later in the conversation, Duncan asked for advice on raising girls. Bryant stated, \u201cJust be grateful that you\u2019ve been given that gift because girls are amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bryant was known for having a close relationship with his three daughters: Natalia, 17, Gianna, 13, and Bianka, 3. In June 2019, Bryant\u2019s wife, Vanessa, gave birth to a baby girl, Capri Kobe. He frequently posted photos of his family on various social media channels. However, he had a close bond with Gianna (a.k.a., \u201cGigi) over basketball. Since his retirement, Bryant was coaching her team, Newport Mesa, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/09\/12\/kobe-bryant-has-the-most-savage-breakdown-of-daughters-basketball-team\/\">The New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/kobe-bryants-last-public-appearance-nba-game-with-daughter-gigi-2020-1\">meme<\/a> with Bryant talking to Gianna while the Brooklyn Nets played the Atlanta Hawks Dec. 21, 2019. It seemed like he was giving advice to Gianna to help with her games. About 81,000 social media users (mainly from Twitter) shared and celebrated their own father-daughter stories. The overall sentiment score was 82.9 percent positive, which demonstrated #girldad is a hopeful outlook to a tragic situation.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, dads with daughters have three sides: protective bear, teddy bear (whether they admit it or not) and\/or a big kid. I am speaking from personal experience since I was raised by a girl dad. Like what many fathers mentioned on social media, my dad raised my sister and I to be strong, independent, formidable women. Additionally, he not only demonstrated how we should be treated, but how we should treat other people. I can attest there is a special bond between a father and his daughter. However, I am also bias to this hashtag.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, whether you see Bryant as a saint, sinner or both, his death is resurfacing emotions and pivotal moments in our past we need to process.
