First, it is recognized as the birthplace of and genesis for the career of Dolly Parton. It is also known for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and for being a major tourist attraction. But it will also now be known as home to Warren Hurst.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sevier County Commissioner<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvlt.tv\/content\/news\/Commission-to-meet-for-first-time-since-outburst-565073192.html\"> Warren Hurst<\/a> made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2019\/10\/22\/local-lawmaker-says-hes-not-prejudiced-white-male-this-country-has-very-few-rights\/\">national<\/a> news in October when he decried the fact that openly gay Pete Buttigieg was running for president stating, \u201cWe\u2019ve got a queer running for president, if that ain\u2019t about as ugly as you can get.&#8221; Said Hurst, a 30 year member of the county commission. He went on to say that, &#8220;a white male in this country has very few rights.&#8221; The remarks led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X3aloVwRmrA\">protest<\/a> where many local residents responded with messages of love for all people and warnings against intolerant leadership within the county [Full disclosure: the author of this post attended the protest].<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/70\/Sevier_County_Courthouse.jpg\/800px-Sevier_County_Courthouse.jpg\" alt=\"Sevier County Courthouse in Sevierville\" width=\"285\" height=\"377\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sevier County Courthouse was the site of recent protests against homophobic and racist comments by Commissioner Warren Hurst. Source: Brent Moore via Wikipedia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the past year, Tennessee has had its share of controversies related to political opposition to the state&#8217;s LGBTQ community. In addition to Hurst&#8217;s comments, this has included a local district attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/tennessee-da-under-fire-saying-he-won-t-enforce-domestic-n1013796\">refusing to prosecute<\/a> in domestic violence cases of LGBTQ couples, and a Knox County Sheriff Officer saying that the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/story\/news\/2019\/06\/12\/knox-county-detective-calls-execution-lgbtq-people\/1419137001\/\">should arrest and execute<\/a> all LGBTQ people. While these and other comments have been met with wide condemnation from many residents, politicians, business leaders, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G0_kwsciz0A\">entertainers<\/a>, not everyone opposed Hurst or these others in the statements that they made. In order to get a closer look as to what the commissioner&#8217;s defenders are saying, we go to Social Studio.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After creating a topic profile using the keywords &#8220;Hurst&#8221; and &#8220;Sevier,&#8221; we see that there are more than 700 tweets on the topic in the past few days. To help narrow down further, we look at the Sentiment and see about half of the post have a positive sentiment while half have a negative one. We will look at the positive results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A review of the sentiments suggests that an overwhelming number of messages were opposed to Hurst. Some messages did defend him on first amendment grounds, but we did not come across many examples of direct support for Hurst except for comments from a white nationalist group.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1175\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1175 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/utccismcc.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-21-at-1.43.59-PM-300x145.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The few defenders of Hurst on social media did so on first amendment grounds with the exception of some white nationalist groups.
