One of the tribes\u2019 cultural traditions still practiced is the game of stickball. In the year 2000, nearly 100 women: mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins, and friends, took the field to play and exercise the matriarchal spirit that the Cherokee were known for. <em>\u13a1\u13d8\u13f4 \u13e5\u13be\u13be\u13db\u13c1\u13ae \u13a0\u13f0\u13b5\u13d0 \u13be\u13db\u13c1\u13b0 \/ She Carries On<\/em> tells the story of these women, how and why they played, and what the game means to them and their families, and the future of the Cherokee people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The 17-minute documentary was produced by Dr. Natalie Welch, an assistant professor of sport management at Linfield University and alum of the University of Tennessee. As a member of the Eastern Cherokee tribe, Welch grew up watching stickball on the Qualla Boundary in North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3050\" src=\"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/she-carries-on-documentary-poster-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/she-carries-on-documentary-poster-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/she-carries-on-documentary-poster-745x1024.jpg 745w, https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/she-carries-on-documentary-poster-768x1056.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/she-carries-on-documentary-poster.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/>\u201cStickball was always a part of my community growing up and I honestly took it for granted,\u201d Welch said. \u201cWhen I started researching it from a scholarly perspective I realized how important it was for the women\u2019s story to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Welch, working with University of Tennessee\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landgrantfilms.org\">Land Grant Films<\/a>, was paired with the Emmy-nominated directing team of Isaac Fowler and Tim Morris to create her film. Fowler and Morris, who were students in the University of Tennessee\u2019s School of Journalism and Electronic Media when they started the project, worked with Welch to bring life to this important, yet undocumented part of her community\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs filmmakers, this project challenged us to consider the implications of centuries of history behind a spiritually and culturally important sport and address questions of gender roles in stickball,\u201d said Fowler. \u201cBy the end of the project, we ended up with a story that shows how sport shapes our perceptions of others and the hope it can instill for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The directors credit Welch with providing the insights that allowed them to properly document the complexities and mystery surrounding stickball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndigenous people have been romanticized or dramatized in ways that place us as relics of the past or communities in despair,\u201d said Welch. \u201cThis results in us not being viewed as real, living, thriving communities. I\u2019m so glad we were able to connect her with Isaac and Tim and help her turn her vision into a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u13a1\u13d8\u13f4 \u13e5\u13be\u13be\u13db\u13c1\u13ae \u13a0\u13f0\u13b5\u13d0 \u13be\u13db\u13c1\u13b0 \/ She Carries On<\/em> will air on East Tennessee PBS on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. and then again on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 8:30 p.m. It will air as part of East Tennessee PBS\u2019s \u201cAppalachian Shorts\u201d series and will be paired with the short documentary, Corbin Expulsion of 1919.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u13a1\u13d8\u13f4 \u13e5\u13be\u13be\u13db\u13c1\u13ae \u13a0\u13f0\u13b5\u13d0 \u13be\u13db\u13c1\u13b0 \/ She Carries<\/em> On is also an official selection of the prestigious LA SKINS FEST. The 14th annual festival aims to showcase the rising talent in Native American filmmaking and takes place Nov. 17-22. It is based at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Grauman&#8217;s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Due to the pandemic, much of the festival will take place virtually. Welch<\/strong> (producer) is an assistant professor of sport management in the School of Business at Linfield University. She is an alumnus of the University of Tennessee and the University of Central Florida and has professional experience working with Nike N7 and Wieden+Kennedy. Natalie is passionate about advocating for Indigenous athletes and equity across all of sport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isaac Fowler<\/strong> (co-director) is an Emmy-nominated documentarian and video producer for VFL Films, the University of Tennessee Athletics Broadcasting Department, focusing on social media and marketing video content for Tennessee Football. As a storyteller, Isaac is passionate about stories of veterans, faith, and sport. Isaac is originally from Roane County, Tennessee, and now lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Morris<\/strong> (co-director) is a 2018 graduate from the University of Tennessee. He now works as a video producer at Brentwood Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Morris\u2019s previous work includes the Emmy-nominated short, <a href=\"http:\/\/landgrantfilms.org\/defenders\/\">Welcome Home Brother.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nick Geidner<\/strong> (executive producer) is an associate professor of journalism at the University of Tennessee, where he also serves as the founding director of the documentary production program, Land Grant Films. Geidner\u2019s most recent film, \u201cThe Library The Dolly Built,\u201d tells the story of Dolly Parton\u2019s Imagination Library and will be premiering in December. Geidner lives in Knoxville with his wife Shelby and their two children, Henry and Sam.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Land Grant Films<\/strong> is a documentary program housed in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
