{"id":3019,"date":"2020-10-07T09:49:29","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T13:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jem.utk.edu\/?p=3019"},"modified":"2025-09-03T11:46:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T15:46:14","slug":"knox-county-library-honors-geidner-the-library-that-dolly-built","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/2020\/10\/07\/knox-county-library-honors-geidner-the-library-that-dolly-built\/","title":{"rendered":"Knox County Library Honors Geidner, &#8216;The Library that Dolly Built&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knoxlib.org\" class=\"ek-link\">Knox County Library<\/a>\u00a0honored journalism and electronic media associate professor Nick Geidner by presenting him with its 2020 Seeds of Imagination Award on Sept. 17 for his work on the Land Grant Films\u2019 documentary \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.landgrantfilms.org\/\">The Library that Dolly Built<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/Nick-Geidner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/Nick-Geidner.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/10\/Nick-Geidner-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This documentary takes viewers behind the scenes of Dolly Parton\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/imaginationlibrary.com\/\">Imagination Library<\/a>, which provides registered children with one free book each month from when they are born to when they turn five years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geidner, who directed and produced the film, has personal experience with this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy oldest son got the Imagination Library books, and we just really loved the program,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was graduating out of the program, so we wanted to do something to say \u2018thanks\u2019 and to acknowledge this program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also explained that this Land Grant Films\u2019 documentary started as a small project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were thinking about doing something fairly small and based around [the program] giving out 100 million books, and [the project] just kept growing and growing,\u201d Geidner said. \u201cIt was a long process \u2026 there was no point where we decided that this was going to become this huge thing. We were originally picturing regional television and PBS stations across the state or something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through this documentary, he learned that our awareness of nonprofits often depends on the nonprofits\u2019 fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a national organization, where at the national level [Parton] pretty much covers all the costs, and locally [affiliates] have to raise some money. In the grand scheme of things, it\u2019s [a relatively small amount of money for the affiliates],\u201d Geidner said. \u201cKnox County, which is a huge county for the Imagination Library, needs to raise a quarter million dollars a year. Other fantastic nonprofits have to advertise and get their story out there, whereas the Imagination Library has never really had to do that because of how it grew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geidner and the Land Grant Films crew wanted to show a new angle of Parton\u2019s life through her philanthropy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we tried to reframe her story, and I think it does tell a little bit of a different story about [Parton] than what has been told before,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wanted to show that every time [Parton\u2019s] gotten any major movement in her career, it\u2019s been directly paired with her coming back to Sevier County and doing something good for her people. I don\u2019t think her philanthropy is appreciated for being as expansive as it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Land Grant Films plans to live stream \u201cThe Library that Dolly Built\u201d on Dec. 9.
