{"id":62420,"date":"2023-09-18T11:17:44","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T15:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jem.utk.edu\/?page_id=62420"},"modified":"2026-03-09T10:14:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T14:14:14","slug":"hill-lecture-series","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cci.utk.edu\/jem\/about\/hill-lecture-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Hill Lecture Series"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Hill Lecture Series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Alfred &amp; Julia Hill Lecture Series<\/strong> on Science, Society, and the Mass Media was established in 1989 by Tom Hill, former publisher of <em>The Oak Ridger<\/em>, and Mary Frances Hill Holton, in honor and memory of their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alfred and Julia Hill<\/strong> founded <em>The Oak Ridger<\/em> in 1949, seven years after the government established Oak Ridge to house workers on the atomic bomb project. <em>The Oak Ridger<\/em> was the first successful privately owned newspaper in the city and marked an important stage in the transition of Oak Ridge from federal operation to private ownership and self-government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom Hill<\/strong> and <strong>Mary Frances Hill Holton<\/strong> were also the principal benefactors of an endowment for the then-named School of Journalism and Electronic Media in 1987 to match State of Tennessee contributions to establish the Julia G. and Alfred G.
