Professor Candace White has been selected as a Faculty Fellow of the Howard H.  Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy in the Global Security Area.

INFORMATION SCIENCES

Chancellor’s ProfessorCarol Tenopir will deliver her keynote speech, “Measuring (and increasing) the value of library services and collections,” at the Route 66 Chapter of the Special Libraries Association–Road Trip Symposium: What Makes Special Libraries Special?, September 14-16, 2018 in Greer, Arizona.

Associate Professor Wade Bishop was selected as the 2018-19 Human Dimensions (AT4) Champion for the Belmont Forum e-Infrastructures & Data Management. He received $45,000 in funding to create initial training resources to ensure that Belmont Forum researchers are equipped with the relevant data management skills necessary to participate in and/or manage Belmont Forum-funded data-intensive, global environmental change and sustainable development research projects.

JOURNALISM & ELECTRONIC MEDIA

Lecturer Maria Fontenot participated in two panels at AEJMC’s annual conference in Washington, DC:

  • “Covering breaking news: From hurricanes to white supremacists”
  • “Reading between the lies: Addressing a lack of truth in today’s political discourse”

Fontenot was also re-elected as the PF&R Chair for AEJMC’s Electronic News Division.

Upcoming WUTK 90.3 The Rock Fundraisers:

  • Wednesday, September 26, 5 – 9 p.m. – Sweet P’s Downtown Dive and Terrapin Brewing presents a “Taste and Toast” fundraiser featuring a special Sweet P’s meal paired with a delicious Terrapin craft beer. The cost is $15 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting WUTK, and Sweet P’s will also match that donation.  Raffle tickets will be sold for more WUTK fundraising including a pair of UT-Alabama football tickets and more valuable prizes!  Sweet P’s Downtown Dive (410 W. Jackson Ave) will also unveil its newly renovated back patio. The Korean BBQ inspired menu for the night will feature smoked English cut short ribs paired with garlic noodles and roasted broccoli with blistered heirloom tomatoes. Terrapin Brewery returns this month as our beer partner.
  • Friday, October 5 is National College Radio Day, and WUTK will be celebrating all day with special programming, and on air fundraising to help fund repairs from a recent lightning strike that damaged the station’s transmitter and three other pieces of expensive equipment. WUTK will also host a fundraiser concert that night at Barley’s in the Old City, beginning at 5 p.m.  The bands Sharkfight, More More More, and Art Smashes Records will perform live.  There is a minimum $5 donation requested for entry, and there will be raffle prizes.
