Allard Named Third CCI Board of Visitors Professor
Suzie Allard, CCI associate dean for research and SIS professor, has been selected as the third recipient of the CCI Board of Visitors Professorship. Allard also serves the college as a professor in the School of Information Sciences and director of the Center for Information and Communication Studies.“I am delighted that my work as a researcher, scholar, and teacher has been recognized with this wonderful honor, and I thank the Board of Visitors, whose generosity established the professorship. Mark Schleifstein to Give 26th Annual Hill Lecture Mark Schleifstein, winner of 3 Pulitzer prizes and more than a dozen other national awards for hurricane and environment reporting, will talk about “Covering the environment as the media transforms around you” when he delivers the 26th annual Alfred and Julia Hill Lecture at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the College of Nursing Auditorium, 1200 Volunteer Boulevard. Find out more.
Spring 2018 Student Field Trip Profiles:
Field trips offer CCI students the opportunity to see their chosen profession in action, meet and network with alumni and learn about interviewing/resume best practices. Three groups of students took field trips this spring: the Communication Studies Club went to Washington DC, the School of Journalism and Electronic Media traveled to New York City and CCI’s Diversity Student Leaders Society went to Washington DC. Here is a recap of their learning experiences.
Twenty communication studies (CS) students led by CS Director & Associate Professor John Haas and CS Lecturer Dean Rice toured national sites and met with communication professionals as part of their trip to Washington DC. Tour stops included the Smithsonian Museum, the national memorials, the Newseum, the US Capitol, and the Library of Congress.
Fourteen students along with JEM Howard Distinguished Professor Stuart N. Brotman and JEM Director and Professor Catherine Luther met with representatives from several media organizations, learned about job requirements from their recruiters, toured studios and watched live show tapings. While in New York, they also took part in a JEM alumni reception.
Thirteen students from CCI’s Diversity Student Leaders Society (DSLS) along with DSLS Director and Communication Studies (CS) Lecturer Alice Wirth, CCI Dean Mike Wirth and CS Lecturer Nick Meade traveled to Washington DC and met with communication professionals and CCI alumni from CNN, SKDKnickerbocker, Liberty & Access for All, the FBI and Microsoft.
UT Grad Student Helps Community While Working on PBS’s Black in Appalachia Juniper Starr, a master’s student in information sciences, is helping to preserve the history of African-Americans in Appalachia. Her work will be part of the East Tennessee PBS digital series Black in Appalachia. The project’s goal is to highlight the history of African-Americans in the development of the mountain South and its culture by collecting materials and narratives, engaging with the public and holding exhibitions.Find out more.
Rentsch’s Mindfulness in Team Communication Featured at Spring 2018 Mic/Nite Communication Studies Professor Joan Rentsch represented CCI at the March 8, 2018 UT Mic/Nite with her presentation, “Bringing Mindfulness to Communication in Teams.” As part of her presentation, she defined mindfulness and differentiated it from other concepts. She also shared research findings relating mindfulness to variables associated with communication and highlighted her research on mindfulness and communication in work teams. Find out more.
