INFORMATION SCIENCES
Assistant Professor Carolyn Hank presented a paper co-authored with Associate Professor Wade Bishop, “Measuring FAIR principles to inform fitness for use,” at the International Digital Curation Conference in Barcelona, Spain on February 20, 2018.
Support for the research presented came from the Gloria and Dave Sharrar Faculty Research Fund, awarded to Bishop in 2017. The paper received the IDCC 2018 Best Paper Award.
Associate Professor Devendra Potnis paper, “WhatsApp for social activism in Ethiopia? Research in progress from US Diplomacy Lab,” was accepted for presentation at the 21st annual conference of the Southern Association for Information Systems to be held in Atlanta, GA, in March 2018. Paper co-authors include: Dawit Demissie (The Sage Colleges), and Jaime Cleek and Jeni Trimmer (MSIS graduate students).

Professor Peter Gross’s article, “When digital media encounters fake news: The effectiveness of a dangerous combination” (in Hungarian), was published in [Me.Dok] (Hungarian journal of Media, History of Press, Communication), 2016, 2: 5-16. https://www.medok.ro/sites/medok/files/publications/pdfs/ME.dok-2017-2.pdf
Assistant Professor Mike Martinez’s paper, “Monkey selfie: A proposed resolution to the enigma of copyright ownership,” has been accepted by the Visual Communication Division for presentation at the 43rd AEJMC Southeast Colloquium, at the University of Alabama, March 8-10.
Lecturer Maria Fontenot and Martinez will participate on a panel, “The ‘dreaded’ media law class: How to make it interesting and engage students,”at the 2018 Broadcast Education Association Convention, April 7-10 in Las Vegas.
Martinez served on a panel discussing the Pentagon Papers after a private screening of The Post by the Knoxville News Sentinel, Thursday, February 22.
WUTK 90.3 FM Volunteer Radio, JEM’s college radio station, will hold a fundraiser Friday, March 2 at The Basement Community Arts Studio in Knoxville’s Old City. The event, ‘Roll A Picasso,’ includes creating a unique picasso-inspired watercolor painting to take home and food from The Landing House (Cambodian, Chinese, and French inspired food). A $20 entry donation covers dinner and all art supplies (BYOB). There will also be a raffle for concert tickets and gift cards to local restaurants and shops.
