Baker Donahue, a communications studies senior, has reached the semifinals in the national Student Startup Madness (SSM) competition with his student startup company In With the Old. The social media-based clothing retailer repurposes and resells vintage collegiate apparel through online social auctions.
SSM began at South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2012. The final eight semifinalists will pitch their businesses to investors and entrepreneurs in March at SXSW in Austin, Texas. This year’s competition began with more than 200 startups from universities nationwide.
Donahue created the company in 2016 and began to scale his business in 2017 after he received funding from two UT business plan competitions. His first step was to purchase $300 of vintage UT apparel. After cleaning and photographing the merchandise, Donahue posted the photos on social media with clever titles. He quickly turned his initial investment into $1,500.
