INFORMATION SCIENCES
Associate Professor Bharat Mehra has been selected to receive the Association for Library and Information Science Education’s (ALISE) 2018 Connie Van Fleet Award for Research Excellence in Public Library Services to Adults. Mehra will be presented with the award in February at the 2018 ALISE Conference in Denver.
Associate Professor Devendra Potnis chaired a session on social media and presented the following paper, panel, and poster at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in Washington DC, October 27 – November 1, 2017:
Paper: “Investigating barriers to “Using Information” in electronic resources: A study with e-book users,” with K Deosthali (U. of Mary Washington) and J. Pino (Pellissippi State CC).
Panel: “Addressing barriers to engaging with marginalized communities: Advancing research on information, communication, and technologies for development (ICTD),” with D. Adkins (U. Missouri), N. Cooke (U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), and R. Babu (U. of Wisconsin Milwaukee).
Poster: “Information networks for bridging information divide in isolated communities of farmers in rural India,” with S. Chengalur-Smith (U. at Albany) and G. Mishra (N. University, India).
JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
JEM Howard Distinguished Endowed Professor of Media Management and Law and Beaman Professor of Communication and Information Stuart N. Brotman and ADPR DeForrest Jackson Professor Mariea Hoy’s article, “Mass shooting reports don’t need gun brand IDs,” was published in Inside Sources on November 6, 2017.

A monograph/book, “Mass media and the horsemen of the educational apocalypse,” is a lengthy interview by Stefana Ciortea-Neamtiu with Professor Peter Gross. It was published November 14, 2017 by the University of West Timisoara Publishing (Editura UVT.ro), Romania. Gross also had his article, “Romania’s history through its newspapers,” published in Transitions Online, November 28, 2017.
