HGTV Founder to Receive Honorary Degree at CCI Commencement

Ken Lowe, chairman of the board, president and CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc., will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Tennessee at the College of Communication and Information’s 2017 Commencement Ceremony on May 11 at 3:30 p.m. in Thompson Boling Arena. Lowe will also deliver the commencement speech to the graduates. Find out more
JEM Professor Littmann Inspires Solar Eclipse Excitement
Hill Chair of Excellence in Science Writing and CCI Board of Visitors Professor Mark Littmann’s newly released book, Totality: The Great American Eclipses of 2017 and 2024, written with co-author Fred Espenak, is a must read for anyone interested in this summer’s total solar eclipse. In addition to the release of the book, Littmann is sharing his vast knowledge and enthusiasm for the upcoming eclipse through a planetarium show and by giving talks. Find out more.
IMLS Grant
UT School of Information Sciences Professors Receive $48,708 IMLS Grant
The UT School of Information Sciences (SIS) Associate Professors Bharat Mehra (PI) and Vandana Singh (Co-PI) have been awarded a $48,708 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to conduct research focused on community engagement efforts using quantitative and qualitative assessment datasets collected from rural library staff in the ten states of the Southern and Central Appalachian (SCA) region. The 2016 Tennessee Associated Press professional and college competition winners were announced on April 8, 2017 in Nashville. UT students receiving awards included four CCI students. CCI AP Award Winners.
CCI NFL Draft picks
Three CCI Student Athletes Drafted by NFL Teams
Three CCI student athletes heard their names called over the three days of the 2017 NFL Draft held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. All were communication studies (CS) majors in the College of Communication and Information. Find out more

ACEJMC Reaccreditation
The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) Accrediting Council voted unanimously to renew accreditation of the undergraduate programs in advertising, journalism and electronic media and public relations for six years.
Science Writing Success
Several students from JEM science writing classes were honored as part of the Society for Technical Communication-East Tennessee Chapter’s 2017 J. Paul Blakely Awards, an annual technical- and science-writing competition for undergraduate and graduate students in East Tennessee colleges and universities.
McClung Speaking Contest
McClung Speaking Contest
The semiannual McClung Public Speaking Contest was held April 25 in UT’s Cox Auditorium. The School of Communication Studies event is the largest public speaking competition in the Southeast.
