COMMUNICATION STUDIES
Director and Associate Professor John Haas was recognized as the outstanding teacher and adviser at the School of Communication Studies’ annual Senior Reception on May 1.
INFORMATION SCIENCES
Assistant Professor Wade Bishop was an invited participant to the Belmont Forum Digital Skills and Curricula Development Workshop in Vienna, Austria where he shared his work on the “Knowledge, skills, and abilities of earth science data job incumbents.” He also gave a book talk at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Geographic Information Science and Technology Group & Urban Dynamics Institute.
JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Professor Julie Andsager served as Interim Editor of Journalism & Mass Communication Educator from October 2016 to April 2017.
The following faculty members received research grants from the UT Professional and Scholarly Development Awards (PSDA) in the Visual and Performing Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Fund for the 2017-2018 academic year.
- Howard Distinguished Endowed Professor of Media Management and Law and Beaman Professor of Communication and Information Stuart N. Brotman for: “The digital innovation cycle in context: From an antitrust litigation settlement to the development of Silicon Valley.”
- Assistant Professor Mike Martinez for: “Private lives in a public office: The image and memory from JFK to BHO by the personal photographers who documented them.”
- Associate Professor Erin Whiteside for: “Imaging equality: Journalism, gender and the multiple mediated realities of Title IX.”
Professor Peter Gross had is article, “The fake newness of fake news,” published in Transitions Online on May 3, 2017.
Professor Mark Harmon won the national Sigma Delta Chi award for small to medium newspaper column writing from the Society of Professional Journalists. This is the second time in four years Harmon has received this honor. The SDX awards will be presented June 23 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Harmon also spoke to the Knoxville Downtown Sertoma Club about the state of freedom of the press on May 3, 2017.
