IS Professor Cortez to Retire
Information Sciences Professor and former director, Ed Cortez, will retire at the end of this year after 11 years of distinguished service. Upon his retirement, Cortez will become a Professor Emeritus. Under Cortez’s leadership, IS joined the iSchool organization to further strengthen its position as an integrated program serving the evolving needs of information science professionals. Academic research and scholarship thrived during his time as director, and several graduates have gone on to successful academic careers. Find out more |

CCI Patio Tailgate News
CCI used its new 3,000 square foot patio for two major tailgates in November. The patio provides a great location for a tailgate as it overlooks Neyland Stadium to the Northeast and the Tennessee River to the south. It offers the perfect backdrop for Vol fans to take photos and party prior to a game. Find out more |

CCI and the Big Orange Give
The Big Orange Give (BOG) raised $1,521,305 campus-wide. Included in the week-long campaign were VolStarters for the Ad Club’s NYC field trip and the Communication Studies Club DC field trip. Thanks to the 166 donors who contributed, CCI more than doubled its $10K goal reaching $21,174. This represents a 14% increase over 2015. See http://bigorangegive.utk.edu/. |

Entrepreneurial Journalism Students Challenge Extremism
Students in an entrepreneurial journalism course this fall participated in an international competition, Challenging Extremism, co-sponsored by the US Department of State and Facebook. The competition required students to create a social media campaign and strategy to instruct young journalists on how to responsibly report instances of extremism. The campaign had to resonate with the students’ peers as credible, authentic, and believable. Find out more |
