CCI Honors Ackermann with Hileman Award

Cathy Ackermann, president and CEO of Ackermann PR, received the 2016 Donald G. Hileman Alumni Award from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s College of Communication and Information at the college’s campaign kickoff and awards gala on Friday, Nov. 11. Find out more
Vote Billboards
CCI Student-Designed Billboards Encouraged People to Vote
Students from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, took on a special project to urge people to get out and vote in a big way. Their messages were on billboards around the Knoxville, Tennessee and Phoenix, Arizona areas. Rob Heller, a professor in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, asked his media graphics students to design posters encouraging people to get out and vote in this year’s election. Public Speaking Center
CCI Opens Public Speaking Center
Public speaking is one of people’s greatest personal fears, and a new facility in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s College of Communication and Information provides tools to help students tackle their anxieties and become better communicators. The Public Speaking Center, in Room 260 of the Communications Building, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 2. “The fear of public speaking is consistent across a number of studies,” said John Haas, associate professor and director of the School of Communication Studies. The center provides facilities and technology to allow students to practice and improve their skills. Find out more.

Dargan Southard
Dargan Southard (BS/JEM ’15), a sportswriter for the Iowa City Press-Citizen, posted a story in October 2016 that went viral. The story focused on an exceptional act of selflessness that took place during a cross-country race. When Southard posted the story in the paper and on social media, the story took on a life of its own.

Benny Smith, WUTK 90.3 The Rock general manager, was recently profiled in a feature story by Knoxville News Sentinel. The station was ranked sixth among the top 10 College Campus Radio Stations in the US by has been with WUTK for 12 years and has extensive previous experience working in various roles at other radio stations.
Students: Givand, Harris & Morgan
Givand, Harris, MorganRocky Topy Royalty Court 2016 for Homecoming included three CCI students among the ten: Bridgett Givand, public relations senior; Kaylyn Harris, advertising senior, and Maggie Morgan, communication studies junior. This marked the first ever Rocky Top Royalty competition to exemplify the Volunteer Spirit through Court members’ scholastic and extracurricular achievement at UT.

Miller Represents CCI at Mic/Nite
Twice a year, the Office of the Provost hosts Mic/Nite, a Pecha-Kucha format gathering, designed to enhance the intellectual, interdisciplinary, and cultural life of UT Knoxville’s faculty and staff. Select faculty members make short presentations to share their research with a wider audience and to promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Communication Studies Associate Professor Laura Miller represented CCI at the October 26, 2016 event. Find out more.

Journalism Students Cover World Food Championships
When the World Food Championships—sometimes called the Olympics of the culinary world—took place in Orange Beach, Alabama, Nov. 10-13, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was behind the scenes and on the sidelines. Journalism and Electronic Media Professors Rob Heller and Nick Geidner took their students to Alabama to photograph and video record the World Food Championships, which included a military chef challenge and cooking competitions focused on bacon, steak, seafood, recipes, sandwiches, burgers, barbecue, chili and desserts.
