ESPN’s GameDay came to UT for the September 24 Florida game. As part of the visit, 50 journalism and electronic media students took a behind-the-scenes tour of the ESPN GameDay operation on Friday, September 23.
Students toured the control room operations and the set followed by a talk from ESPN reporter and CCI alumnus Gene Wojciechowski (BS/JEM ’79).
An opportunity was also given to two very lucky students on Saturday the 24th. Tyler Cookston (PR) and Kalee Simpson (AD) along with ADPR Associate Professor Courtney Childers were invited backstage during the GameDay broadcast (see Student Profiles for more on their GameDay experience).
“We arrived on campus a little after 7 a.m. on Saturday,” said Childers, “and began observing the preshow setup and preparation.” The group met George Whitfield, Jr., former quarterback and ESPN contributor, backstage where he immediately handed over his personal iPad to the two students and said, “Go get me some good stuff for social!”
“This type of field experience provides our students with the opportunity to see how their classwork applies in real-life situations,” said Dean Mike Wirth. “They also get a sense of the speed and responsiveness that’s required to do the job.”
