JEM Professor Rob Heller’s Eyes on LaFollette Tennessee State Museum exhibit opened on Oct. 3 in Nashville and runs through Nov. 30. The exhibit features 21 years of photos taken by his advanced photojournalism students as part of Heller’s annual Eyes on LaFollette class project. Over 300 individuals attended the Oct. 2 opening reception including at least 24 former students. Read more
The College of Communication and Information celebrated its 5th annual Diversity and Inclusion Week Sept. 22-25. Total in person attendance plus live video stream viewership was more than 2,300. The week featured a keynote address by San Diego County Library Director Jose Aponte on Sept. 24 along with lively panel discussions focused on a variety of important topics designed to foster introspection and personal growth with respect to diversity and inclusion. CCI Student Participates in News21
Jackie DelPilar (BS/JEM ’14) joined 28 other students from across the country at the News21 fellowship program at Arizona State University this past summer. DelPilar’s participation in the News21 program was made possible by a generous gift from CCI Board of Visitors (BOV) member John T. IS Researchers Win Grant to Look at Rural Public Libraries’ Role in Economic Development
Two UT Knoxville faculty members received a $49,557 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to look at the role rural public libraries play in the economic development of the Appalachian region. Associate Professor Bharat Mehra and Assistant Professor Wade Bishop, both of the School of Information Sciences within the College of Communication and Information, will lead the work. Read more.

In Memoriam: Dr. Clarence “Bud” Minkel
Dr. Clarence “Bud” Minkel of Knoxville passed away on Monday, Sept. 22. One of CCI’s faculty awards is named in his honor, the “C.W. (Bud) Minkel International/Intercultural Award,” as a result of his service as interim director of the School of Information Sciences and his many positive interactions with college faculty members during his time as dean of UT’s Graduate School.
