JEM Hosts Walsworth Yearbook Journalism Institute

Dr. Nick Geidner

More than 40 high school students and teachers from Tennessee and Mississippi visited the Knoxville campus July 17 and 18 for the Walsworth Yearbook Journalism Institute hosted by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media.

Attendees gained valuable insights with respect to interviewing and newswriting techniques, news style and video storytelling in sessions taught by JEM Assistant Professor Nick Geidner, UT Director of Student Publications Rachel McClelland,  and JEM Senior Lecturer Lisa Byerley Gary.   They also toured UT’s media facilities including: WUTK-FM, hosted by Tony Farina; TVC cable channel, hosted by Mike Wiseman; and The Daily Beacon, hosted by McClelland and Eric Smith, associate director of student publications.

The conference was sponsored by Walsworth Yearbooks and organized by UT alumni Bill and Jackson Stoess.
