Professor Dania Bilal’s co-edited book (with Jamshid Beheshti with the School of Information Studies, McGill University, Montreal-Canada),  “New directions in children’s and adolescents’ information behavior research,” is in press and is being published by Emerald Group Publishing, U.K.

Bilal has a refereed chapter in the book (co-authored with Valerie Jopeck (MS/IS ’12))  titled, “Young girls’ affective responses to access and use of information communication technology (ICT) in developing countries.”.


Assistant Professor Kimberly Douglass participated in a panel, “Supporting dynamic STEM careers for underrepresented minorities: A networking reception and forum,” May 1 at the New York Academies of Science. Other panelists included Christine Hendon (Columbia University), Richard Torres (Regeneron), and Oscar Pineda-Catalan (American Museum of Natural History). The panel moderator was Joel D. Oppenheim (The Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at New York University School of Medicine). 

Douglass’ co-authored article, “The role of federal libraries and federal librarians in research data services (RDS): An exploratory study,” will be published in the summer issue of Documents to the People (DttP). Co-authors are Chancellor’s Professor Carol Tenopir, doctoral student Ben Birch, Associate Professor Suzie Allard, Carol Hoover (Los Alamos National Lab), Mike Frame, (USGS and SIS), and Lisa Zolly (MS/IS ’98, USGS). 

Douglass also served as the keynote speaker for the annual Diversity Student Leaders Society Induction Ceremony and Dinner. 


Assistant Professor Wade Bishop made a presentation on Metadata Blues to the Tennessee Geographic Information Council, Apr. 2014 in Memphis.

Bishop also presented “Job analyses of emerging geographic information professions” at the Association of American Geographers annual conference Apr. 2014 in Tampa, FL.

Bishop’s had his co-authored article (with S.R. Veil),  “Opportunities and challenges for public libraries to enhance community resilience,” published in Risk Analysis, 2014, 34 (4), 721-734.




Director and Professor Peter Gross had his article, “Re-orienting mass communication research to a cultural approach: A plea in regard to censorship and self-censorship studies,” published in  Me.Dok, a Hungarian journal of Media, History of Press, Communication, Spring 2014, 1: 13-27.


Senior lecturer Lisa Gary and Lecturer Melanie Faizer were both awarded a summer teaching institute grant. They will use the grant to work on the History & Principles of Journalism course (JEM 175) for Fall 2014.
