U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry presented Kelly Hunt (BS/JEM ’08) with The Secretary’s Award “for courage, commitment and great personal sacrifice in promoting education, encouraging outreach and strengthening the ongoing partnership between the United States and Afghanistan.”
Hunt was injured in an April 6, 2013 suicide attack in Afghanistan where she served as a Public Diplomacy Officer for the U.S. Department of State. Two civilians and three soldiers were killed in the attack that also injured three other State Department personnel. Hunt continues her long road to recovery.
Joshua Pate (MS/JEM ’04) will work as a volunteer news reporter during the Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia to be held March 8 – 15. Pate is currently an assistant professor in sport and recreation management at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.
