Local author Vince Vawter, 2014 Newbery Honor winner for his book Paperboy, spoke to faculty and students in the CCI Patrick Auditorium January 27. His recent book for young people is set in Memphis, TN in 1959 and features an 11-year-old boy who stutters. A School Library Journal reviewer says, “Vawter portrays a protagonist so true to a disability that one cannot help but empathize with the difficult world of a stutterer. Yet, Victor’s story has much broader appeal as the boy begins to mature and redefine his relationship with his parents, think about his aspirations for the future, and explore his budding spirituality. The deliberate pacing and unique narration make Paperboy a memorable coming-of-age novel.” Paperboy is recieving high literary acclaim including starred reviews from Booklist and Publisher’s Weekly as well as much praise from The Stuttering Foundation of America.
