Associate Professor Michael J. Palenchar and his co-authors’ (Heath, R. L., McKie, D., Coombs, W. T., Edwards, L.) article, “Shaping the field,” is in press with Public Relations Review. 



Assistant Professor Courtney Wright was awarded a 2013-2014 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Travel Grant to fund her visit to Louisiana State University (LSU) to collaborate with Dr.James Honeycutt, LSU Distinguished Professor. Dr. Honeycutt also received a grant and will visit UT at the end of February. Their research will examine social cognition and teasing behavior.



Assistant Professor Wade Bishop has been awarded a 2013-14 SEC Faculty Travel Grant. The award will fund Bishop’s travel to the University of Missouri in April to do the following:

1)     Engage in a half-day grant writing activity with assistant professors Sean Goggins and Heather Moulaison;

2)     Deliver a widely advertised lecture related to the use of GIS in library and information science (LIS) research; and

3)     Participate in a mentoring lunch meeting with graduate students to nurture young scholars and increase overall SEC collegiality. 



Lecturer Maria Fontenot, Professor and Associate Dean Catherine Luther, and doctoral student Ioana Coman’s manuscript, “A wave of sources: A comparison of sources used in U.S. and Japanese newspaper coverage of the tsunami in Japan,” has been accepted and scheduled for publication in the Fall 2014 edition of Newspaper Research Journal-.

A follow-up story to the Tennessee Alumnus feature story about Professor Rob Heller’s Eyes on LaFollette annual project catches up with the student photographer who captured the front cover photo. 

Assistant Professor Erin Whiteside published ‘”I am not a cow!’ Challenging narratives of empowerment in girls’ sports fiction” in the current issue of Sociology of Sport Journal, 30(4), 415-434.  

Whiteside also has a chapter, “Sports information and new media,” in the newly-released (2014) Handbook of sports and new media (pp. 143-152). New York: Routledge.

Assistant Professor Mike Martinez and Professor Dwight Teeter’s article, “McBurney v. Young: 19th century precedents used to downplay 21st century FOIA statutes,has been accepted for presentation by the Law & Policy Division of the International Communication Association (ICA) Conference in Seattle.

Martinez also moderated a panel, “New-school technology/Old-school values, with Nicole Kraft, of Ohio State University; Ken Paulson, Middle Tennessee State University; and Mike Farrell, University of Kentucky at the AEJMC Scholastic Journalism Division Midwinter Conference at the First Amendment Center in Nashville.

Martinez has been awarded a grant of $1,100 to support his research on presidential photographers and the image and public memory of the presidents they documented in the collections of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library.

Lecturer John Shearer won the Knox Heritage 2013 Preservation Award for his coverage of historic preservation issues across the community in the Knoxville News Sentinel. The Media Award was given to Shearer in November at Knox Heritage’s annual meeting held at the Bijou Theatre.
