Dean Mike Wirth was selected as one of two honorary coaches for the UT vs. Western Kentucky football game. His duties began on the Thursday before the game when he sat in on the quarterbacks meeting, toured the football training facilities and the Thornton Center, attended practice and met with UT Coach Butch Jones.
On Saturday prior to the game, Dean Wirth along with Dean Steve Mangum of the College of Business Administration participated in the Vol Walk with the team. During the event they viewed the game from the sideline. Assistant Provost and Senior Associate Athletic Director Dr. Joe Scogin, who serves as director of the Thornton Center, extended the invitation to Dean Wirth and hosted the honorary coaches.
“As a part of this experience I was able to have some face time with Head Coach Butch Jones,” said Wirth. “He impressed me with how he interacts with his players, coaches and staff. The organization is a well-oiled machine with precision execution. Coach Jones is very committed to having his players succeed both on and off the football field. In particular, he wants them to graduate and be successful once they are no longer playing football.”
