ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
Associate Professor Lisa Fall has been appointed by the PRSA Educational Affairs Committee to serve as a university reviewer for the Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR). In this capacity, she will conduct university site visits, survey various constituents (alumni, internship sites, administrators from across campus, etc.), then make recommendations. COMMUNICATION STUDIES
Assistant Professor Jonathan Pettigrew has been awarded $399,771 to customize drug and violence prevention programming 7th and 8th grade youth in Nicaragua, Central America. The two-year grant entitled, “Citizen security and demand reduction: Program development and implementation,” is sponsored by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs through the Department of State. The grant will entail formative research, development of an infrastructure for delivering programming, curriculum adaptation and creation, and a quasi-experimental evaluation of program effects.
INFORMATION SCIENCES
Assistant Professor Devendra Potnis has been appointed to serve on the Program Committee for the 4th International Conference on Mobile Communication for Development (M4D). The M4D2014 Conference will be held in Dakar, Senegal on April 8-9, 2014 (see http://mobilemondaydakar.org/m4d2014/en/).
JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Professor Ben Bates, Assistant Professor Nick Geidner, Yixi Zhu (Southeast Univeristy, Nanjing, China) had their book chapter, “The Economics of broadband,” accepted for publication in Robert G. Picard and Steven Wildman (Eds.), International Handbook on the Economics of Media. Cheltenham, UK: Edward Elgar Publishing.

Professor Barb Kaye and Tom Johnson (U of Texas-Austin) had their paper, “The dark side of the boon? Credibility, selective exposure and the proliferation of online sources of political information,” published in Computers in Human Behavior, 29(5), 1862-1871.
They also presented the following papers at AEJMC’s national convention in Washington DC. “Restoring sanity through comic relief: Parody television viewers and political outlook;” and “Some like it lots: The influence of interactivity and reliance on credibility.”
