ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
Associate Professor Beth Avery and doctoral candidate Melissa Graham presented their paper, “Crisis Communication and Organization-Centered Situational Considerations for Management” at the AEJMC Conference in Washington, D.C., Aug. 8-11. The paper won 2nd place in the open research paper competition for the Public Relations Division.
Assistant Professor Abbey Levenshus and first author Brooke Liu (University of Maryland) had their chapter, “Opportunities, challenges and trends in US federal government communication” (pp. 59-78) published in Government Communication: Cases and Challenges (Bloomsbury). The comprehensive handbook edited by K. Sanders and M.J. Canel examines government communication in 15 countries.
INFORMATION SCIENCES
Chancellor’s Professor Carol Tenopir presented a talk, “Altmetrics and traditional metrics: What do scholars use to judge quality?” at the 15th Fiesole Collection Development Retreat, held this year in Singapore, Aug. 12-14. The invitation-only retreat hosts a mix of scholarly publishers, library administrators, and researchers to discuss issues of relevance to scholarly communication. It started in Fiesole, Italy (where it returns every fourth year).
JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Director and Professor Peter Gross has been invited along with David Weaver (Indiana University, Bloomington) to be keynote speakers at the Center for Research in Communication’s international conference. It is being held at the University of Georgia, Athens, Sept. 5 & 6.
Professor Rob Heller’s class project “Eyes on LaFollette” was awarded an honorable mention for the AEJMC Newspaper Division – Newspaper Project Award. http://www.lafollettepress.com/content/eyes-lafollette-2013
During AEJMC’s 2013 Conference in Washington, D.C., Assistant Professor Michael T. Martinez was named Law and Policy Chair for the 39th Annual AEJMC Southeast Colloquium at the University of Florida, March 20-22, 2014.
Assistant Professors Erin Whiteside and Amber Roessner presented “Commemorating forty years: Title IX, anniversary journalism and the politics of memory” at the AEJMC annual conference in Washington DC August 9.
Whiteside’s chapter “Advertising and sporting events,” appears in the recently-released second edition of Advertising & Society: An Introduction (Carol Pardun, Ed.,Wiley-Blackwell , 2013).
