Faculty News: Swan, Childers, Kotowski, Fields, Prentiss, Winston, Allard and Legg

Faculty News June 2013

Professor Sam Swan received another Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant to work with Hiwassa University and Haramaya University in Ethiopia in late July and early August.  It is a three-week assignment.  He will conduct training on radio news writing and reporting and provide help to their radio station.

Courtney Childers (AdvPR) and Mike Kotowski (CS) have been approved for promotion to Associate Professor with tenure by the UT Board of Trustees. Both promotions are effective August 1, 2013.

Promotions have also been approved for Megan Fields, Suzy Prentiss and Annette Winston (all in the School of Communication Studies) to Senior Lecturer effective August 1, 2013.

Associate Professors Suzie Allard (SIS) and Bob Legg (JEM) recently conducted a science communication workshop in Ankara, Turkey.  TUBITEK, which is the equivalent of the National Science Foundation for Turkey, hosted the workshop and invited the participant scientists who produce material for the popular science magazines and books TUBITEK publishes.  The four-day workshop included sessions on science writing, science communication through video, interviewing scientists, big data, writing for children, and information seeking.  The two other workshop team members were NASA Postdoctoral Researcher Arsev Aydinoglu (C&I/PhD ’11) and David Brill, freelance writer and retired director of communications for the UT Energy, Environment and Resources Center.   During the team’s tenure in Turkey, the protests were raging at night, but Turkish hospitality was excellent.
