ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

Professor Ron Taylor was given the American Academy of Advertising’s Charles H. Sandage Excellence in Teaching Award at the AAA 2013 Annual Conference in Albuquerque, NM, April 4-7. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to advertising teaching. He is the seventh individual to receive the Sandage Award since it was created in 1996.

Professor Eric Haley has been asked to serve as the first ever Executive Editor for all three American Academy of Advertising publications – the Journal of Advertising (JOA), the Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising (JCIRA), and the Journal of Interactive Advertising (JIA). He will also continue to serve as the editor of JCIRA.

Assistant Professor Courtney Childers  received an award for best paper in the Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising (along with her two co-authors, Tom Reichert and Len Reid). The title of the paper is  “How Sex in Advertising Varies by Product Category: An Analysis of Three Decades of Visual Sexual Imagery in Magazine Advertising.” 

Doctoral student Nate Evans was one of four students worldwide to win a $2,000 American Academy of Advertising Dissertation Proposal Award.

 

 INFORMATION SCIENCES

Professor Dania Bilal is the invited guest speaker to the Research Group for Information Retrieval (RGIR) lecture series to be held on Apr. 15 at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Bilal’s presentation is titled “Information Retrieval and Youth: The Question of Relevance and Readability on the Web.”  The purpose of RGIR is “to promote and stimulate research in different aspects of Information Retrieval (IR) including, but not limited to: information behavior, human computer interaction with IR systems, IR evaluation, IR design, information visualization, and multimedia retrieval.”

Assistant Professor Vandana Singh had the following papers accepted:

  • “Why Migrate to an Open Source ILS? Librarians with Adoption Experience Share their Reasons and Experiences” in LIBRI International Journal of Libraries and Information Services.
  • “Using Open Source Software in Libraries: Implications for Social Justice” in Journal of Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries, June 2013 issue.
  • “A Case Study of Migration to an Open Source ILS: Partnership among State Libraries” in Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries 2013.
  • “Evaluating and Improving an Information Portal for Open Source Integrated Library Systems” in Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Human Computer International 2013 (HCI 2013).

 

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA

Assistant Professor Erin Whiteside had two chapters published in the Handbook of Sport Communication edited by Paul Pedersen. The chapters are titled:

  • “Gender in the workplace: Using a post-structural approach to theorize diversity in sports media organizations” (pp. 29-37). 
  • “The glass ceiling and beyond: Tracing the explanations for women’s lack of power in sports journalism” (pp. 146-154), co-authored with M. Hardin (Penn State).

Doctoral student Denae D’Arcy and Assistant Professor Mike Martinez won first place in the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Law & Policy Division’s 2013 national paper competition announced at the BEA Convention in Las Vegas, April 7-10. The title of the paper is “Setting the Record Straight:  Citizens¹ First Amendment Right to Video Police in Public”.

Doctoral students Ivanka Radovic and Iveta Imre won second place in the BEA News Division’s 2013 national paper competition announced at the BEA Convention in Las Vegas. The title of the paper is “Believing the News: The Effects of Type of Journalist and Type of Sources on Reporter Credibility, Article Credibility, and Organizational Credibility”.
