CCI Academic Advisor Gary Peterman is featured for his work in the April edition of TennACADA Times


Assistant Professor Laura Miller and doctoral students Betsy Dalton and Scott Eldredge attended the 2013 D.C. Health Communication Conference, Mar. 28-30 in Fairfax, VA to present their research project, “‘Life is not supposed to be pain free:’ Nurse-patient communication, health literacy, and the abnormalization of pain.

They will also be presenting a poster, “Nurse-patient interactions about pain management and prescription opioids,” at The University of Tennessee College of Nursing’s STTI Gamma Chi Interprofessional Healthcare Research Day. The event will take place on Monday, Apr. 8 from 1:00-5:00 p. m. on the UT Ag campus.


Assistant Professor Kimberly Douglass, Associate Professor Suzie Allard, Chancellor’s Professor Carol Tenopir, Lei Wu (PhD/C&I ’11), and Adjunct Professor Mike Frame’s paper, “Managing Scientific Data as Public Assets:  Data Sharing Practices and Policies among Full-time Government Employees (FTGEs),” was accepted for publication by The Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST).

Assistant Professor Carolyn Hank along with S. Craig Finlay, Cassidy R. Sugimoto, and Michael Johnson had their article, “The structure of the biblioblogosphere: An examination of the linking practices of institutional and personal library blogs,” published in the Journal of Web Librarianship, 7(1), 20-36. doi: 10.1080/19322909.2012.71430.


Esquire Magazine writer Tom Junod recently spoke via Skype to Chris Wohlwend’s JEM 414 class (Magazine and Feature Writing), sharing his expertise on interviewing and writing. Junod, two-time winner of the National Magazine Award, has written for GQ, Sports Illustrated, Outside, Life, and numerous other publications. He has been writer-at-large for Esquire since 1996. Junod, who wrote the Esquire article on which the documentary The Falling Man was based, also participated in the CCI event held on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. 

C&I doctoral student Denae D’Arcy will  present a paper co-authored with Assistant Professor Mike Martinez, “Setting the Record Straight: A First Amendment Right to Video Police in Public,” at the Broadcast Education Association’s annual conference in Las Vegas, April 4-7, 2013. 

D’Arcy will also participate in a BEA panel focused on “Where Do We Draw the Line? Interacting (or Not) with Students on Twitter.”
