Woody Paige’s Big Idea: Name the NCAA Women’s Basketball Trophy the Summitt Award! During a recent visit to Knoxville, famed Denver Post and ESPN sportswriter Woody Paige shared his Big Idea that the NCAA Women’s Basketball Trophy be named the Summitt Award in recognition of Pat Summitt’s tremendous positive influence on the sport of women’s basketball similar to the NFL’s decision to name the trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winner after Vince Lombardi. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhVBSJcNDUc
As an alumnus who studied journalism at UT in the 60’s, he certainly has a strong loyalty to the university. However, his respect for Pat Summitt goes well beyond this. He cites Summitt’s integrity and high-standards as a compass for those who wish to reach the highest level of achievement in women’s college basketball – the summit of the sport.
Paige recommends that others who concur with this idea sign a petition to the NCAA at http://www.change.org/patsummitt. The College of Communication and Information (CCI) fully supports this effort, and CCI Dean Mike Wirth is asking all UT alumni, faculty, staff and students, especially the CCI family, to join this effort and sign the petition. When you have added your name, go to the CCI Facebook page and “like” the article about this Big Idea.
