ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
Associate Professor Michael Palenchar is one of several professors who will lead a preconference workshop entitled, “Communication Campaigns: Bridging Theory and Practice,”at the National Communication Association (NCA) Conference next week in Orlando. His session and paper is entitled, “Risk communication campaigns related to energy production and food safety: The value of right to know policies for addressing behavioral change.” Palenchar is also part of an NCA panel presentation entitled, “2012 Commission on Public Relations Education Report: Standards for Public Relations Education for the Professional Master’s Programs in the United States.” He is also the incoming chair of NCA’s Public Relations Division.
COMMUNICATION STUDIES
The UTK Faculty Senate voted last month to include Non Tenure-Track Faculty (NTTF) members for the first time as faculty senators. Communication Studies Lecturers Howard Grover and Suzy Prentiss were two of the ten non tenure-track faculty members elected to serve as faculty senators during AY 2012-13.
INFORMATION SCIENCES
Associate Professor Bharat Mehra delivered a presentation entitled, “Small businesses’ information seeking practices and use of broadband in the Southern Appalachian region: An exploratory survey of the perspectives of Tennessee’s rural librarians” as part of a panel on “Information Outsiders of the 21st Century: Access and Implications for Information Behavior Research” during the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) 75th Annual MeetinginBaltimore, MD, Oct. 26-30.
JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
Doctoral student Denae D’Arcy was featured on WATE-TV and WUOT-FM as a “social media analyst” for 2012 election coverage. She discussed some of the research she is doing at UTK regarding social media and online news as well as recent trends in social media.
