Eighteen Advertising and Public Relations (AdvPR) students, led by faculty members Eric Haley and Courtney Childers, and 30 Journalism and Electronic Media (JEM) students, led by faculty members Sam Swan and Georgiana Vines, traveled to New York City in January where they visited a variety of businesses and met CCI alumni.
AdvPR students visited with Kevin Kirksy, Marketing Director at ESPN, as well as alumni from DDB Worldwide, Mediaedge:Cia, Publicis, Young & Rubicam and Wunderman.
JEM students visited the Associated Press, ABC, CBS, NBC, the Food Network (owned by Knoxville-based Scripps Networks), CNN, ESPN, the New York Times, Ladies Home Journal, Fitness magazine, Bloomberg news service, Fox News and eurocheapo.com. The group witnessed firsthand the multi-platform journalism that is prevalent in today’s news industry.
The media professionals with whom students met advised them to get multiple internships and learn to write because “lots of writing is involved,” whether you’re out front as an anchor or reporter, behind the scenes in production, working for an ad agency or writing for a Web site.
CCI alumni in the New York area also had the chance to visit with the students and hear from Dean Mike Wirth at a CCI alumni reception held at the Young & Rubicam Conference Center.
Dean Wirth has been on the road for additional alumni receptions in Chattanooga (hosted by Board of Visitors member Ron Harr) and Nashville (at the Tennessee Press Association’s Winter Convention), with two more upcoming receptions in Atlanta and Washington, D.C.
