Susan Barnes joined the public relations faculty at Belmont University in Nashville in 2008 following a long professional career in public relations and journalism. She served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Tennessee for many years.
Barnes worked for 15 years in university advancement at the University of Georgia, University of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University and Austin Peay State University. She was a partner in her own public relations firm and has worked extensively in community relations for U.S. Department of Energy contractors in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She is an award-winning writer and a former feature writer for the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Barnes is accredited in public relations by the Public Relations Society of America and became a Fellow of PRSA in 2006. She is a Trustee of the PRSA Foundation. She has been a board member for the UT Davidson County Alumni Association and is on the UTAA Women’s Council.
She has been married to John Barnes, a 1970 UTK civil engineering graduate, since 1969. John is assistant manager for Harpeth Valley Utilities District in Nashville. They have two daughters, Mary Cunningham (deceased), a 1993 graduate of UT Chattanooga, and Jane Kleinhans. They have a grandson, Joey Kleinhans.
