JEM Starts NSSA Student Chapter

TitansThe Tennessee Titans’ top media personnel visited CCI March 6 as part of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media’s launch of a newly-formed student chapter of the National Sports Broadcasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA).

This chapter is one of the first NSSA student chapters in the country.  As a part of the launch, JEM hosted a panel discussion titled “Inside the Tennessee Titans’ Media Machine” in the Scripps Lab.  Students were given the opportunity to hear and interact with Director of Broadcasting and “The Voice of the Tennessee Titans Mike Keith (B.A./PLSC ’91);” Gary Glenn, Titans’ director of Internet operations and publications; and Robbie Bohren, Titans’ director of media relations.NSSA

Panelists inspired students by sharing details of their backgrounds and journeys to their current posts.  All three indicated that the recipe for success included:  building a foundation by completing a quality educational experience, working hard, and being willing to start at the bottom.  Each had to persevere and struggle to get to where they are today.  Keith, an eight-time Tennessee Sportscaster of the Year, worked with JEM Assistant Professor Erin Whiteside to launch the NSSA chapter. He also helped organize the panel discussion, which provided CCI students with the opportunity to converse with one of the best broadcasting and public relations teams in the NFL.

Whiteside said after the event, “We are very grateful to Mike Keith, Gary Glenn and Robbie Bohren for their willingness to nurture and inspire our students.  Participating in today’s panel discussion and helping us form an NSSA student chapter demonstrate their commitment to their profession and to providing a legacy of high standards for our students to follow.”
