The Communication Studies Club and CCI’s Diversity Student Leaders Society (DSLS) took field trips to Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC during March 2012.
During its annual field trip to our nation’s capital, CCI’s Communication Studies Club met with representatives from Toyota Government Relations, Microsoft Legislative Relations, Global Event Partners, Kelly Anderson & Associates, Team Blue Politics, Inc., Jefferson Consulting, and U.S. Congressmen John Duncan, Jr. and Phil Roe. They also toured the U.S. Capital, the Library of Congress and the offices of the FBI.
Director and Associate Professor of the School of Communication Studies John Haas said, “It is always refreshing to see DC through the eyes of students on their first visit. Their excitement coupled with the people and ideas to which they get exposed make this field trip an annual highlight for communication studies’ students.” Typically, about half of the students on the field trip are visiting DC for the first time.
DSLS students, led by DSLS Director and Communication Studies Lecturer Alice Wirth, met with top executives from The Charlotte Observer, NASCAR, ESPN, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and TIAA/CREF. They also attended a CCI Alumni reception, which gave students the opportunity to meet and network with Charlotte-area alumni.
“Getting out of the classroom and into the field plays an important part in helping DSLS students prepare for professional careers,” said Wirth. “Meeting with UT alumni and other communication and information professionals educates and inspires our students as they begin the transition from students to professionals.”
