Mehra participates in Tenn. Library Association panel
Bharat Mehra, associate professor, was invited to participate in a panel entitled, “Practical Magic: Partnering within the Profession & Collaborating in the Community,” at the Tennessee Library Association Staff Development Workshop in the Blount County Public Library on October 12, 2010.

Mehra, Black and Singh publish paper in Tennessee Libraries
Mehra also has co-authored a paper with Kimberly Black and Vandana Singh, assistant professors, entitled, “Rural Library Professionals as Change Agents in the 21st Century: Integrating Information Technology Competencies in the Southern and Central Appalachian Region,” that has been published (2010) in Tennessee Libraries.

Tenopir presents in Korea, Germany
Carol Tenopir, Chancellor’s professor, CCI director of research and director of the Center for Information and Communication Studies (CICS), made 2 invited presentations last week:

  • “Measuring (and Increasing) the Value of Academic Libraries,” Korean Library Association 40th Anniversary Meeting, Seoul, Korea, October 8, 2010
  • “Beyond Topic: How Readers Choose Which Articles to Read,” International STM Publishers Association Annual Meeting, Frankfurt, Germany, October 5, 2010. The presentation reported on a project funded by the Publishing Research Consortium. The research team consisted of Carol Tenopir, Suzie Allard (SIS), Ben Bates (JEM), Ken Levine (CS), and Ben Birch (CCI doctoral student).



Institute of Newspaper Technology held at UT
Fifty-three newspaper professionals from 13 states attended the thirteenth annual Institute of Newspaper Technology last week. Co-sponsored by JEM and the Tennessee Press Association and held in our College computer labs, the workshop included classes in software used by newspapers for their print and web editions. Rob Heller taught techniques for creating audio slideshows and videos for news websites. Support was provided by John McNair, Anne Hensley and Deborah Douglas.

Student story published in Like the Dew
A story by Ann Marie Pace, JEM senior and president of TVC, the student-run television channel, has been published by Like the Dew: A Journal of Southern Culture & Politics. The story, titled “Zeta Tau Amazon,” is about Pace’s experiences in the Brazilian rainforest during the summer of 2009. The link is
